Polymeric caps protect the adapters against dust and allow easy identification: single-mode adapters come with white (FC) and blue (SC) caps; multi-mode adapters come with black (FC) and beige (SC) caps
FC, SC, ST adapters are inline (i.e. fiber optic connectors are installed at both ends) and they are used for the precise centering of connectors' ferrules in special sleeves
